The main objective of research for the environment under H2020 is to promote the sustainable management of both the man-made and the natural environment and its resources. To this end, increased knowledge on the interaction between the climate, the biosphere, ecosystems and human activities is sought and new environmentally-friendly technologies, tools and services are developed.

- Protection, conservation and enhancement of cultural heritage, including human habitat improved damage assessment on cultural heritage
- Technology assessment, verification and testing
- Earth observation and assessment tools
- Earth and ocean observation systems and monitoring methods for the environment and sustainable development
- Forecasting methods and assessment tools for sustainable development taking into account differing scales of observation
