Please note: No Synergy Call is foreseen for 2014 or 2015. Depending on the Scientific Council's analysis of the pilot phase of the ERC Synergy Grant (calls were made under Work Progammes 2012 and 2013), there may be a Synergy Grant call for 2016.

ERC Synergy Grant

Over the past several years it has become evident that small groups of researchers working together on interdisciplinary issues are an increasingly productive component to the advancement of frontier research.

These grants will link several Principal Investigators and their respective teams and give them the opportunity to push forward the cutting edge of research. It is the hope that this will not only advance knowledge but also encourage new lines of enquiry across the boundaries of established disciplines.

The evaluation of proposals will be aimed at identifying projects with synergy and complementary research that could lead to breakthroughs that would not be feasible if addressed by an individual Principal Investigator working alone.

Structure:

The team must be made up of at least two, and at most four, Principal Investigators. There must be one Lead Principal Investigator.

ERC synergy groups are expected to be interdisciplinary and located in the same place to ensure a significant amount of time can be spent face-to-face. However it is not a hard and fast rule if the Principal Investigators can show the value of their collaboration.

Applications may be made in any field of research according to the bottom-up principle, i.e. investigator driven research. Trans-disciplinary proposals are encouraged.

The maximum grant is € 15 million for up to 6 years.

Proposal submissions will be about 25 pages in length.
